Colour for Photosynthesis
« on: November 14, 2012, 02:26:42 pm »
The leaves of plants are green in colour, due to the presence of a green-coloured pigment "Chloroplast". This is also essential for photosynthesis. So, we may conclude that green colour is essential for photosynthesis.

But we see the colour green, because all other colours of light are absorbed, and only the green part is reflected.

So, does photosynthesis require all but green colours, the green colour, or am I missing something here :?:

The green colour is so because "Chlorophyll absorbs light most strongly in the blue portion of the electromagnetic spectrum, followed by the red portion. However, it is a poor absorber of green and near-green portions of the spectrum, hence the green color of chlorophyll-containing tissues."

I.E, there is nothing ' special ' about the colour green for photosynthesis. It is just that the pigment ' chlorophyll ' is incapable of absorbing green colour. So there can be other pigments which absorb light ( for photosynthesis) which are not green, but blue or purple or maybe black

Then why is it taught that green colour is essential for photosynthesis ?

Because Chlorophyll is green, and it is essential for photosynthesis !!!

Do you really think they spare some thought on how to and what to teach ???

small kids cant understand the spectrum and reflection phenomenon so you can't blame the system.

You can teach kids anything you can manage to grab their interest in. So, blame the system.

It should be thought that " Chlorophyll is a green pigment essential for photosynthesis and it gives the leaves their colour" not " Chlorophyll is a green pigment which gives colour to the leaves, so the green colour is essential for photosynthesis". Fault of the teaching mechanism.
